Dr. Rob Thacker

Dr Rob Thacker is the current Director of the Science Outreach Centre at Saint Mary’s University. As an internationally recognized computational astrophysicist he held a Tier II Canada Research Chair from 2007-2017 at Saint Mary’s, following positions at Queen’s University and the University of California Berkeley. His work in theoretical galaxy formation has focused on so-called “feedback” processes, including the impact of supernovae and supermassive black holes on galactic structure, and he has received numerous grants and awards for this research. 

During his career he has held key roles in Canadian astronomy strategic planning first as the Vice-Chair of 2010-2020 Long Range Plan for astronomy and later as the Chair of the 2015 Mid-Term Review, providing consultation to multiple government agencies as well the Prime Minister’s Office in these roles. In 2018 he became President of the Canadian Astronomical Society and helped start the 2020-2030 Long Range Plan, which was delivered to the community in 2020. 

Acutely aware of the need for broader public appreciation of science, he has played a leading role in science outreach in Nova Scotia since 2009, receiving the 2015 Discovery Centre Science Champion Award, and in 2018 he was recognized by the Canadian Astronomical Society through their Qilak Award for astronomy outreach. He is also recognized as being broadly skilled in administrative work and labour relations. He has been the Lead Negotiator for the Saint Mary’s Faculty Union since 2019, having previously served in various capacities since 2012. In recognition of his work in supporting the Saint Mary’s community he received the 2021 President’s Award for Exemplary Service.
