Personal memoriam to my good friend and teacher Dr Dave Lane.

Since the International Year of Astronomy in 2009, I've really come to enjoy outreach and put more effort in to it. My enthusiasm was spurred by a transformational experience I had at the Banff Science Communications workshop, and I wrote a short summary article outlining my experiences. At the beginning, I want to acknowledge fantastic work done in outreach by Haligonian friends as well, especially Adam Sarty, Observatory Director David Lane, and Roby Austin. Dave's work on making the Burke-Gaffney Observatory accessible via twitter is a real world first! The grad students & faculty also play a really important role in conducting observatory Open Houses as well as doing their own school visits. Additionally, the Halifax Chapter of Royal Astronomical Society of Canada do an enormous amount of important outreach about astronomy in the local community, and SMU is proud to be a part of the Astronomy Nova Scotia collaboration.

My views on outreach are fairly simple: We have a responsibility to ensure that the research and benefits we produce as a scientific community are effectively communicated to the public. In a world where specialists in science coverage were commonplace, that would not be a concern, or equally in situations where outreach professionals were sufficiently funded. Unfortunately, at least in Canada, we are desperately short of both. The net result is scientists (and others) are stepping in to help translate knowledge more effectively. That doesn't mean I think everyone should do outreach constantly, rather those that see value in it and enjoy it, should feel free to do it and, ultimately, be respected for the effort that they put into it.

I've written blog posts, popular articles and given many public lectures across the country, but increasingly I'm finding mass media taking up more of my time. Reaching new audiences is vitally important as social media (I'm on twitter here) has tended to make our focuses narrow, we tune our filters to give us what we want to hear about. Mass media still can be turned off, or tuned out, but most people will continue to listen to newscasts until the next segment. And that's where we can reach new and different audiences.

2016 was the year I really made a personal breakthrough in broadcasting. I hosted and co-hosted the Saturday version of the Science Files, which ran for 46 episodes with Richard Zurawski and myself as hosts/cohosts. Unfortunately the show was cancelled on Dec 17th 2016 due to legal dispute between Richard and 95.7. I also appeared for dozens of episodes as cohost of the 1-hour long Science Files within the Rick Howe Show. I want to say a huge thank you to 95.7 for giving me the chance to host and essentially run a radio show - it was a great experience and I learned so much about broadcasting! In case you are wondering, there are buttons to push!

In less than one year we quintupled the market share for the show to 5.1, while also building a higher female listenership than male, despite the station's top demographic being 24-50 males. The show paid attention to gender representation and also discussed inclusivity/accessibility issues in science, including having scientists with disabilities as guests. Losing the Saturday Science Files was a very disappointing development for science programming in Nova Scotia.

In addition to "Science Files" I spent 18 months working with Jon Muma of Calgary 660, on his weekly short "Science Ship," from November 2016 to July 2018. Jon eventually moved to work in TV and the piece ended with his departure, we hope to resume the piece at some point. From January 2017 I had a two-year run with Bob Murphy as part of "Mainstreet" on CBC Nova Scotia. It was great to be able to talk science with a Nova Scotia perspective on a weekly basis. Unfortunately, Bob moved to Maritime Noon at the beginning of 2019 and so it was decided to wind-up that particular slot. In almost two years of columns I wrote over 100,000 words - enough to fill a large book!

From Februrary 2017 to June 2021 I was a weekly columnist on "Ottawa Today" with Mark Sutcliffe on 1310 News (later CityNews). In exactly 200 appearances we covered some amazing stories from the Big Bang through to what ancient poop can tell us about gut bacteria. The segment finished with Mark transitioning to a new career - all the best Mark! As of July 2021, I've started a weekly column on 580 CFRA Live in Ottawa. The show is hosted by Andy Pinsent, and we're doing a fresh and enthusiastic look at science stories bubbling under the headlines. I'm also appearing weekly on the Monday edition of "Science Files" within the Todd Veinotte show (Rick retired in 2021). This segment continues to be as popular as ever!

Hosting radio shows, especially with a call-in component is both fun and a little nerve-wracking! But after 1000+ interviews/shows and 250+ hours of broadcasting either as host or cohost, I like to joke I'm finally getting the hang of it! I've started giving short introductions to media communications for working scientists and for students too. The most important lesson is that you can work at these skills and even if you do feel awkward initially, you can get better!

I also appear regularly on CBC TV and CTV Atlantic.

At the bottom of this page is an almost complete list of outreach activities since 2009, which I'm going to use as a place to keep footage and audio (they can disappear, as has happened with a number of my popular articles). I've not listed blog posts as they were too numerous. That said, one post on the science behind mirages over the Bay of Fundy remains a personal favourite!

Outreach is genuinely rewarding in itself, but I have to admit to feeling very honoured to receive the 2018 Qilak Award from the Canadian Astronomical Society, the Nova Scotia "Science Champion" award from the Discovery Centre of Nova Scotia in 2015, as well as being honoured by the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada by being asked to present their Ruth Northcott Memorial Lecture.

Lastly, I often get asked why I chose astronomy as a career. It boils down to being very curious, and rather in awe, of the universe around us. Bill Watterson always captured that feeling brilliantly -
