Dr. RITUPARNA KANUNGO

I am a nuclear physicist working with neutron-rich nuclei that are our laboratory access to neutron-rich matter in the universe, such as neutron stars and supernovae.

Accelerator centers where we work :

TRIUMF

GSI

RIKEN

Nuclei are the core of mater and make up 99% of our body weight. Our universe is largely powered by nuclear reactions in the core of stars. I find it fascinating to explore how nature organized these tiny objects.

It turns out that most of the nuclear species that we find on our earth today were created in the core of exploding stars, like the supernova. The roots of this creation involve nuclei that are very short-lived and neutron-rich or proton-rich. These nuclei are appearing to be quite different from those we have on earth. My research involves re-creating these species in our laboratories and studying their properties. I perform these experiments at the accelerator centers mentioned above.
