Chemistry 4414.2 - Symmetry and Chemical Applications of Group Theory
This is a one-semester third or fourth-year chemistry course designed for
Honours in chemistry but also taken by majors. Starting from the mathematical
definition of a group from abstract algebra, specific geometrical groups in
three dimensional space related to symmetry are defined. The mathematical
properties are then applied to vibrational and electronic spectra, and
different theories of chemical bonding. Linear algebra is helpful.
