Joseph Hynes
born around 1843 in English Harbour East, Nfld.
died Oct 7, 1929 on Woods Island, Nfld.
married Martha Murphy, from O'Derin, Placentia Bay, Nfld.
- During the massive emigration to North America during the Irish potato
famine, Joseph Hefferen and a Hynes gentleman switched passports, because
each wanted to live in the others assigned place of immigration. To conceal
this fact somewhat, Mr. Hefferen changed his name to Joseph Hynes.

- His first wife was Martha Murphy, with whom he had five children.
Mary Smith looked after the children after Martha Murphy died.
Joseph Hynes eventually married her, apparently against
the wishes of his first set of children.
